Generation to Generation: Preserving Our Mi’kmaw Heritage
The Mi’kmaq people of the Port au Port Indian Band have a rich and resilient history that spans generations. Our ancestors lived in harmony with the land, guided by traditional knowledge, cultural practices, and a deep respect for nature. As stewards of this heritage, it is our duty to preserve and pass down the wisdom and experiences of those who came before us. Through storytelling, recorded interviews, and historical documentation, we ensure that the voices of our Elders continue to guide our future.
Honoring the Voices of Our Elders
To uncover your true potential you must first find your own limits and then you have to have the courage to blow past them.
To capture the lived experiences of our community, members born before 1949 were interviewed to share their personal stories, reflections, and insights. These interviews provide invaluable perspectives on Mi’kmaw traditions, challenges faced by previous generations, and the evolution of our community.
Many of these stories recount childhood memories of life before modern conveniences, the importance of family and community, and the deep-rooted connection to the land. These oral histories allow younger generations to understand their identity and appreciate the resilience of our people.
